Chickenpox, a fatal disease has been overshadowed by many recent newcomers but its effect is very adverse when it occurs in pregnant ladies. Pregnant women are mostly immune to this disease but once affected, it goes to an extreme that even abortion might occur and can also cause ones life. But basically for pregnant women chickenpox vaccination will be given during their first prenatal visit. Almost all the carrying women have antibodies to prevent the varicella virus and will be immune to this deadly sickness. Therefore when pregnant women are exposed to persons who are affected by chickenpox, will not have any effects on their infants.

Chickenpox during pregnancy is not contagious when women acquire chickenpox during their third trimester are at a greater risk of their life of attaining varicella pneumonia. The most significant and dangerous syndrome of this infection is scarring of the skin. Eye problems, mental retardation, low birth weight of the infants is other symptoms of this infection.Chickenpox during pregnancy become fatal at this stage of maternity. Another case of infection which affects the new born is that if the mother acquires chickenpox infection before five days or after two days of pregnancy. This will cause the life of the new born. The treatment for this case of infection is treated with the antiviral drug called acyclovir (Zovirax), which is determined to be safe during pregnancy. Women affected by varicella pneumonia are observed in hospital with IV acyclovir drug treatment. This antiviral drug actually produces antibodies when it senses the presence of varicella virus.
